Humans have been celebrating the time of winter solstice for thousands of years. While the expression of these celebrations and activities change over time, there is an enduring essence. Amid this time of darkness, we turn toward our inner light to shine the way.
I experience this season deeply within the heart. It is the spirit that lives on within the story of legends. Love conquering all. It is the story of an enduring spirit which will not be defeated.
In my life, I experience this in small ways every year as the winter solstice rolls around. The darkness can be challenging. I look for the light amid the darkness.
I seek out moments of connection with people, and find ways to be useful. I create routines that feed my spirit. I light candles. I seek to know myself better, so that I can build a structure that will support me in the darkest of times.
This is an annual opportunity to practice this process of girding the structure of self care, so that it may be strong all year long. So I may be ready when the darkness looms heavy on my spirit in any season.
A Season of Hope
The hero never gives up. This message is one that I take to heart, because I believe that we can do anything if we believe in ourselves. This is something that will never come from outside of us. It is an inner strength, the cultivation of that persistent light. It is otherworldly, an eternal flame that gives us power to rise above any challenge we may face. To walk through the valley of the shadow of death, and have no fear.
The enduring spirit of humanity is awe inspiring. This time of year reflects that spirit of hope. Celebrating the re-birth of the sun, the winter solstice marks a turning point as we slowly climb out of the darkness.
It is a death and re-birth process, bringing an opportunity to reflect and let things go which we do not wish to carry forward into the new cycle. It is a dawning of new possibilities. Even if it is just an inkling. A whisper. A few more minutes of light.
In this season of hope, I reflect on my goals. I look at my personal goals, and also changes I’d like to see in the world. I allow myself to dream big.
I look at these goals, and I ask myself, “What am I doing to bring this into fruition?”, and “Where I am I standing in my own way?”
If we want to create a better life, or a better world, we must take responsibility for our own actions or inactions. It is helpful to reflect, and determine if the actions we are taking are moving us in the right direction, and if not, consider what adjustments must be made.
Self awareness is key. This takes a willingness to look at yourself, and to be honest. Remember: self exploration is best undertaken with unrelenting courage, honesty, and compassion.
The Future is Whatever You Make of It – Make it a Good One
This is a potent time of year for self-reflection, goal setting, and taking time to think about what we truly care about and what we want to create for the future. We can draw on this hero spirit to allow ourselves to dream big. To re-create ourselves into the person we truly want to be. To strive towards becoming the best version of ourselves that we can imagine. Taking time each year to reflect and refine how we want to show up in the world, and what sort of impact we wish to make.
If we want to embody the hero archetype, we must be willing to step outside the comfort zone and take on the impossible. We must not give up. In the process we will face our biggest fears. We will likely be given the opportunity to choose between what is right, and what is easy. The hero chooses to do what is right.
I believe in the Will to do Good within us all. I believe in the enduring spirit within each of us to fight for what is right. There is a lot of darkness in the world, but let us not forget who we are, and what kind of miracles we are capable of creating.
For thousands of years, humans have gathered in this season of darkness to celebrate the enduring human spirit. We light candles, and carry a flame of hope. We celebrate miracles.
