As a meditation instructor, I often tell people: you are not your mind. We have thoughts, but we are not our thoughts. With meditation we can train our minds to work for us, rather than against us. It is like training a puppy: we must be consistent and loving to cultivate a mind that will be our best friend and companion. If not, we may end up with a mind that is unruly and destructive.

What we choose to focus on has a big impact on the way we move through life. Without conscious training (meditation is key) the mind has a tendency to worry. If it’s not one thing it’s another. I found myself in this pattern: when I solved a problem, my mind was very quickly searching for the next thing to pull into focus and worry about. I realized it wasn’t really about the things that my mind featured as worries, but the impulse of the mind to worry that was the  problem. This is the worry addiction.

Breaking the Pattern

There are many tools that can support you in shifting this addiction to worry (more on that below). Ultimately it comes down to self-mastery of the mind. This is doable, but it takes practice,  consistency and diligence. I can’t imagine a better use of energy though, when you consider your mind will be with you throughout this life. It is through your mind you can shift your perspective to live a life of greater joy.

Consider this:

  • Does your mind support you in enjoying your life? Open your senses and pay attention to the world around you. Do you notice the smell of the fresh mown grass? The feeling of the water in the shower. The simple joy of a smile from a stranger, or moments of meaningful connection with people as you go through your day.

When our minds are stuck on worry, we can miss the little things that are beautiful and bring vibrancy and meaning into our lives. Open your senses and take time to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, sensations, and opportunities for connection as you go through your day.
  • Do you focus on what you love about life? The taste of the food you eat, the body that moves your through the world, the home you live in, the people who love you and support you. Does your mind acknowledge all of the wonderful things you have in your life?

When we focus on what we don’t have, and what we want, we are in a perpetual state of lack. Train your mind to focus and appreciate the things you have in your life, and then expand it!
  • Do you wake up excited for the opportunity that each new day brings? To have another day here on earth, where you can enjoy the company of the people you love and the beauty of this world. To be free to pursue the desires of your heart. You have choice in the actions you take and how you spend your energy.

How much mental energy do you spend on worry, complaining or regretting something not being the way you would like it to be? If there is something you are not happy about with your life, change it. Complaining is a waste of energy. There is always a way forward.

  • Do you live life fully alive? When we move through life as habit and routine, we are checking out. We let the unconscious mind sit in the driver’s seat, with worry riding shotgun. Remember, you are not your mind. Your spirit is longing to express in the world. To explore and experience the good and beauty of life. To create good and beauty in the world.

Reclaim your power and step into the driver’s seat. Kick worry out the door. When you recognize your mind getting out of line, success! Now you can shift it.

Making the Shift

This isn’t a problem to be solved. It is a practice of training your mind so that when you find yourself worrying you can 1) be aware and 2) shift it. It’s an ongoing relationship and it will get easier, but the work is never done. Your mind will continue to fall out of line from time to time, but if you’re prepared you can quickly course correct to limit the disruption.

There is no easy solution or quick fix, but there is a path of spiritual training that has existed for thousands of years for this purpose. This is the path of the initiate, as carried forward within the Lineage of King Salomon and the Modern Mystery School. This path has worked for me, and helped me move from high levels of anxiety and depression, feeling powerless and sick, to loving my life. I have gained a sense of agency, greater understanding and healing.

The following tools are key to supporting you on this journey of self-mastery:

    1. Meditation – A daily meditation practice helps you to build your mind muscles. It strengthens focus and gives the real you (who you are as spirit) the ability to direct your mind and your thoughts. It takes practice, but is so worth the investment of your time and energy. Please don’t be discouraged if you find it hard at first, stick with it.

For initiates in the Modern Mystery School we recommend 2 hours of meditation a day. Start where you can. I recommend at least 30 minutes as a good goal to get started and notice the benefits.

There are many styles of meditation (I teach several styles for different purposes), but one of the best places to start is with the MAX Meditation System™. This style of meditation is effective for really relaxing and shifting into a meditative state. It was created by Modern Mystery School founder Gudni Gudnason, and brings together a combination of ancient and modern techniques for an incredibly effective meditation for relaxation and quieting the mind. This class is taught worldwide, and you can likely find a MAX Meditation System™ teacher near you.
    2. Healing Sessions –  There are several healing sessions that can assist you on this journey of self-mastery. All healing is self-healing, requiring a willingness to move forward into greater alignment with who you are. It is letting go of anything that separates you from your true essence (i.e. worry of the mind). Healing is remembering who you are as a divine, spiritual being, and living from that foundation.
Remember: you are an infinite spiritual being. The things that worry your mind are likely based on the illusion that you are your mind or your body. You have a mind. You have a body. But that is not who you are. You are so much more than that. These ancient lineage healing sessions facilitate the healing process. The place to start is the Life Activation. This session activates your spiritual DNA and assists you in embodying more of your spirit essence within your physical body. Other sessions that can support the self mastery of the mind: Ensofic Ray, Etheric Reconstruction, and Full Spirit Activation.
    3. Spiritual Training – Gain tools and walk the path of self mastery with the Empower Thyself Initiation program. The tools and teachings you learn in this 2-day program will give you a strong foundation to begin an accelerated process for self-mastery.Continue the process with Universal Kabbalah, a living system for restructuring the mind to bring it into greater balance. To live life from the middle pillar, and transform the challenges of life into opportunities. If Spiritual Training within this ancient Mystery School lineage is calling to you, find a Guide near you to connect and learn how to get started.

There is a way to break free from the worry addiction. This is the process of cultivating peace within. It is a journey of healing and remembering who you are, and becoming more aware of your energy and how you use it. Self-mastery doesn’t mean you won’t have challenges to face, but in those challenges your mind will be your greatest ally. Get out of your own way by learning to harness the power of your mind for good.
